Group Therapy Dates & Topics

October 24th: Why Letting Go Is Hard:

It’s normal to have difficulty recovering from trauma or pain from the past. Just because the experience is over doesn’t mean you haven’t been deeply affected. It can take time to recognize and understand what’s happened and what it means for you. Letting go can be scary, but on the contrary, it can be an act of freedom and healing.

October 31st: Understanding Anger:

Anger is the emotional response that we have to an external or internal event perceived as a threat, a violation or an injustice. Anger is a part of the normal human experience. However, if we handle and express this anger inappropriately we can do harm to ourselves and/or others.

November 7th: What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment, without judging or trying to change it. This involves observing your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without getting caught up in them. Understanding and learning about this powerful concept can improve many areas of life, including mental health, relationships and resilience to stress.

November 14th: The Harmful Effects of Unresolved Grief:

When we experience loss, we can feel disoriented because our brain perceives this loss as losing a part of ourselves. Before the loss, when we wanted to connect with our loved one, we were rewarded with interaction, support and stability. But after the loss, our brain still wants to connect. When the brain can’t yet accept the loss, this can cause physical, mental and emotional upset that lingers. That’s why processing grief is so important.

November 21st: Managing Intrusive or Unhelpful Thoughts

Thoughts play a key role in determining how we feel and what we do. If we interpret a situation negatively, it can profoundly influence the way we react. We have all experienced situations where we have misinterpreted or misunderstood something, reacted in an unhelpful manner and then found that we had applied distorted, unhelpful or faulty thinking to the situation. This group will explore effective ways to challenge unhelpful and intrusive thoughts.

November 28th: No Group – Happy Thanksgiving!

December 5th: Healing Yourself From Past Hurts

Forgiving someone who has wronged you is a sign of strength, not weakness. It does not mean that you condone the hurtful actions, but rather that you will not allow those actions to burden you any longer. Strategies will be explored.

December 12th: Clutter and Trauma: How Are They Related?

When a person experiences traumatic events, they build protective walls as a coping mechanism to shield themselves from the outside world. Having the stuff around them in their physical space gives them a sense of control that is more important than having a clean house. Clutter and trauma have a complex relationship, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a permanent relationship. A clutter-free life is possible.

December 19th: The Importance of Play for Adults

Play has numerous benefits for adult’s physical and mental health, including helping us feel more supported, be more physically active, and have more life satisfaction. As adults, we often don’t play nearly enough, but with the right intention, you can begin to bring more play into your life. Fun activities will be explored.
